Onlangs tipte ik de podcast serie van Rick Rubin en John Frusciante. Dezelfde Rick Rubin zat nu met the Edge aan tafel. U weet wel de gitarist van U2. Een band waar ik al mijn hele leven naar luister en vroegste muzikale herinnering aan heb.
Toch is het — als het over U2 gaat — meestal Bono die je hoort, dus ik was blij verrast eindelijk een keer the Edge (alleen) te horen, en het is een mooie aflevering geworden.
Het gaat — natuurlijk — over muziek maken, maar ook over zaken als geloof en meer. Zo wist ik niet dat de familie oorspronkelijk uit Wales kwam.
Paar tidbits:
- U2 heeft oude nummers opnieuw opgenomen, want “muziek is tegenwoordig overal”, maar je bent niet altijd in de stemming om Bono op z’n max te horen.
“Today of course we got access to music at all times so music becomes the soundtrack to every part of your day and I think there’s a need at times to have this kind of music that is just with you but in a softer more intimate way” - Muziek waar je mee opgroeit kun je moeilijk waarderen omdat dit zo bekend is.
“So music was an escape you know it was it was like a window to something else going on in another part of the world. So the last thing we wanted to do was listen to traditional Irish music to be reminded of what we were very well aware of every day, which was Ireland at that time. Now I look back and it’s beautiful music. There’s actually a huge Revival of folk and traditional music happening right now in Ireland and some great new groups Lankum, Ye Vagabonds, Lisa O’Neill these are really like regarded new folk and traditional artists but back then not really understood” - The Edge zijn talent is z’n oor en Larry z’n talent is dat hij drumt op de zanger.
“Larry doesn’t play to the guitar he doesn’t play to the bass Larry plays drums to the to the singer which is why he’s such a great drummer because all his nuances and his inflections and the groove he’s picking up from the vocal.” - Het belangrijkste gereedschap voor muziek maken (of wat dan ook maken):
“The most important tool to good composition is recognition that you’ve got something really good. And the enemy of getting to something really good is not something bad but something that’s just good and something that’s kind of almost it. It can really fool you and waste a lot of your time. - Kill your darlings:
